Today, I’m excited to give you a sneak peek into one of my most valuable resources!

As a Certified Teacher, Reading Specialist, and Special Education Specialist, I have a unique set of skills designed to help you teach your children with confidence. But—I’m also a seasoned homeschooling mom to four amazing kids, so I know firsthand what works when it comes to making learning to read both efficient and enjoyable. That’s why I created How Wee Read, a homeschool reading curriculum that blends fun games, stories, interactive puzzles, and the powerful Science of Reading to help young minds thrive.

Today, I’m going to walk you through an in-depth example from one of the coursebook pages. You’ll get a taste of some fun games for letter recognition and see firsthand how the lessons flow seamlessly to make learning enjoyable for your child.

I’ve built the most amazing reading curriculum that works. This resource is designed to empower you to teach your child to read in the most fun, effective, and engaging way possible.

How Wee Read starts with Part 1: Phonological Awareness. In Lessons 1-7, simply open your coursebook, read the activity, and play as your child develops auditory skills, such as rhyming, word and syllable awareness, sounds, and so much more.

Today, I’m going to give you a peek at Part 2: Letters, Sounds, and Blending. In Part 2, we split the letters into six small groups, teaching them in a very special order. We begin with the letters satip, and n.

First, we introduce your child to the lowercase letters in this group. Using the letter cards provided with How Wee Read, point to each letter while you say the letter name and have your child repeat it. Once they are comfortable with the lowercase letters, see if your child can find the uppercase matches. They often look similar! Help your child with any remaining matches.

Once the uppercase and lowercase letter names are known, we introduce the sounds. You can tape the letter cards to a hallway or your child’s bedroom door to practice throughout the day. For the vowels A and I, focus on the short sounds for now—/a/ as in ‘alligator’ and /i/ as in ‘iguana.’

In Lessons 8 and 9, your child will learn lowercase and uppercase letter names and letter sounds through simple games for letter recognition, and start blending those sounds together!

Now, let’s take a look at these games together!

Lesson 8: Go Fish

Play Go Fish with the uppercase and lowercase letter cards!

Place the cards in a pile face down on a table and draw three cards each. Take turns asking, “Do you have a __?” filling in the blank with a letter name or sound. If the person has it, they hand it to you. If they don’t, they say, “Go Fish!” and you draw a card from the pile. Continue until all letters are matched.

Your child will have so much fun playing this over and over that they won’t realize they mastered the first grouping of letters and sounds!

Lesson 9: Word Match

Once your little one is very familiar with all six letter sounds, it’s time to read!

Pick a word card (e.g. “tin”) and two picture cards (one that matches the word and one that doesn’t, e.g. “tin” and “pit”). Place the three cards in front of your child and ask if the word card says “tin” or “pit.” Your child will blend “/t/ – /i/ – /n/” and hear that the word is ‘tin.’

Blending sounds takes practice! As your child gets more confident, you can reduce the amount of help you provide. Play with this activity until your child can independently read all of the word cards from this lesson.
