‘Just’ a Nature Walk

‘Just’ a Nature Walk

nature walk

Yesterday Sammy and I met some friends and went for ‘just’ a nature walk.  I did not have any learning activities planned.  I did not bring a clipboard, magnifying glasses, or even a basket.  We went for ‘just’ a nature walk. And oh the learning that took place!

We met 3 other Mama’s with their wee ones all between the ages of 3 and 4.  And each Mama had a baby in a sling.  Yes, we were quite the hikers.

Our nature walk started out much like any other – with the collection of treasures.  My Sammy loves his collections.  Right away I heard those math words: longer, shorter, 8 sticks, just 2 more sticks (I heard that one a lot!)

Next, our wee ones were able to stand in a dry pond.  In the Spring it is full of water, but now it was just an indent in the Earth.  That was a neat spot to explore.  Some wonderful Gross Motor activities happened very naturally: climbing, stepping, lifting, and pushing.  And some wonderful social skills to, as they explored this area as a group.

Sammy found an old hollowed tree that he could fit right inside.  It would make an amazing fort – complete with a little look out hole.  And on the front of the tree … possibly the most magical thing we have ever seen in the forest:

Sammy examined all the different insects and bugs he could find.  We also noticed all of the different leaves and how some tree leaves have started changing colour.  He wondered why weeds and small plants don’t change colour.  Umm ……..

We were surrounded by amazing things this nature walk.  So many questions, and wonderings, and learning going on … all without a plan.

It was such a lovely nature walk.  Especially because it was ‘just’ a nature walk.

This was such a great reminder for myself that my wee one is so naturally curious.  Natural learning opportunities are everywhere – and given the chance, my Sammy will find them himself!

What natural learning activities have you done lately?
