Imaginative Play
Can you smell it? Your home is about to become a bakery! Your little one will dive into pretend play as a busy baker, whipping up pastries and serving happy “customers.” The learning that happens along the way is truly the icing on the cake!
Literacy
For Little Ones: This month is a wonderful opportunity to build vocabulary through playful conversation and simple directions. Chat with your little one about the names of the different bakery creations, and describe all the textures and shapes you are creating together out of dough. Following directions is another important literacy skill that will be developed with this resource!
For Older Children: Encourage writing and spelling practice with bakery-themed fun that makes literacy feel deliciously hands-on. The recipe cards are a wonderful way to build reading skills, with pictures to assist each step of the way.
Math
For Little Ones: Playing with money and purchases is a wonderful and natural way to build math skills! For very young children, simply use the money as each bill or coin being worth “one.” Perhaps you buy 3 croissants and you tell your child it will cost 3 coins. Adjust the math as needed so it is the perfect challenge for your child – not too hard and not too easy!
For Older Children: Just like above, playing with money and making change are fabulous ways to build math skills for older children. Get creative with what customers might want to purchase AND what bills and coins they might use! This month, we are also working on fractions as we play with cherry pies.
Art
Art is abundant this month, as we create all of our pastries! Children can create these out of playdough, or they can draw them on cardboard to cut out and use again and again. You’ll also get to put together your very own DIY pretend play oven!
Fine Motor Skills
Rolling, pinching, shaping, and cutting—these are perfect ways to strengthen those little hands and improve their writing skills, all while creating sweet treats. So take the time to whip up a batch of playdough this month – you will be so glad you did!
Critical Thinking and Problem Solving
Add a sprinkle of challenge! Give your child fun bakery dilemmas to solve and watch their creativity and logic rise. Perhaps a customer wants to take home a whole bunch of pastries, but only rode a bike – how could they get them home? Or perhaps a customer only has a $100 bill to spend! Take this opportunity to help your child become a critical thinker and problem solver!
