A Snow Activity for Preschoolers: Winter Road

A Snow Activity for Preschoolers: Winter Road

We had a little break in the frigid temperatures today.  Instead of the -30 weather we have been having, we were sitting at a (comparatively) comfortable -8.  Which meant we could actually go outside and enjoy ourselves for longer then a few breaths.  We ended up spending the whole morning outside with some snowy activities: shoveling, building and playing in forts, playing with dump trucks, creating some snow art (a bit differently then this snow art), which lead to this fun activity!

Madeline was the one who brought the markers outside for a neat snow art activity, which I will share soon.  Sam and Benjamin were having so much fun playing with the tractors and dump trucks on the driveway while I shoveled that I decided to extend this play by adding a snowy road.

To create this snow activity for preschoolers I simply used regular markers and drew a road on the driveway.  We had a fairly substantial snow fall over night, so there was a thin layer of snow left on the driveway (even after all. my. shoveling … ahem) so I simply took some markers and drew over the thin layer of snow.  We made a winding road and added in a few stop lights and some stop and go signs.  Are ‘go’ signs a real thing somewhere?  Or is it only in cartoons?  I suppose I should know this …

I used Dollar Store markers as writing and drawing on snow does tend to wear them out quickly.  They will be our outdoor markers for the season.

Benjamin is just reaching the age where he is actually able to play with his brother.  At 15 months he wants to be a part of everything and is beginning to understand simple games.  Sam would fill a dump truck with snow, bring it down the snowy road to Benjamin, dump it out, and Ben would smash the snowball with his tractor and push it out of the way for the next load.  It is so sweet to see them creating little games together. Oh the fun of snow!

Sam also enjoyed making his own snow activity for preschoolers and playing with the trucks on his own.  He uses so much imagination and creative talking while he plays!  I love listening to him.  Today he was a gas station attendant, construction worker, man who needed to get to work but the road was too snowy, and a snow farmer harvesting his snow 🙂

I love getting the kids outside everyday.  Even when it is blistering and chilly (and -30) we try to step out for just a minute of two … to check a bird feeder, shovel a path off of the deck for our dog Tundra, or just make a few footprints.  It sometimes seems like a lot of work to get everyone dressed and ready for just a breath of fresh air – but it is always worth it.  Even just a quick bout outside makes my wee ones much happier. And then we have an excuse for hot chocolate too.
