Snow Painting with Markers and Water

Snow Painting with Markers and Water

We have been spending a lot of time outside in the snow.  If you have joined us before, you likely know my kids love to be outside and they also love art.  So it makes sense that theses two loves join often.  We had some fun with eye dropper snow art and then some fun with drawing in the snow with markers to make a road for toy trucks.  This snow painting activity came from drawing with markers … except it ended SO MUCH COOLER!

Now, I am afraid these pictures do not do this snow painting activity enough justice.  The end result is beautiful – the art looks almost spray painted.  And the process is child-led, fairly mess-free, and very simple.

Here is how we did snow painting with kids:

First of all, the kids drew pictures with markers.  Any pictures work, but Madeline did her’s with different shades from the same colour family … purples and shades of blue … and it ended up looking really neat.  Another tip is to leave some snow in between some of the drawing because it lets the marker’s bleed onto the white snow in the next step … which brings us to the next step.

Next, we took a spray bottle filled with water, set the dial to a little stronger than a mist, and sprayed the pictures.  The colours blended together, bled onto the white snow, and took on a tie-dye appearance.  It was so neat to watch!

It was also interesting for Sam, my preschooler, to play with the different streams of water and watch what happened to the snow.  Of course, he loved the ‘jet’ function which clean shot a hole in the snow.

We have been having a lot of fun getting creative outside … perhaps it is all that fresh air that is pumping little brains with oxygen … but the creativity that is happening out there lately is remarkable 🙂
