Summer Camp Activities for Big Kids

Summer Camp Activities for Big Kids

Summer is such a special time for kids. It should be about making memories, playing outside, and exploring the world around us.

Last week on the blog, I shared a deep dive into Summer Camp at Home Little Kids Edition and how some of my most cherished childhood memories revolved around the summers at home, spending time with family, and exploring nature. I loved stargazing during backyard camping trips, chasing frogs by the pond, picking wildflowers, and feeding birds on nature hikes.

As my children got older, I still wanted to continue those magical moments and keep the engaging learning going with summer camp activities. So that is where Summer Camp at Home Big Kids Edition started!

The two versions of Summer Camp at Home, Little Kids (2-6 years old) and Big Kids (6-12 years old), share the same whimsical stories and are perfectly matched with loads of summer camp activities. So, if you have siblings in both age groups or spend time in the summer with children of different ages, grab the Bundle!

Today, we are going to focus on the Big Kid Edition and take a look at what’s included. I’m excited to dive deeper into this wonderful resource and share how it can transform your summer into something truly special for your family.

Let’s take a closer look at each of the themes.

Theme #1: Butterflies

In the Butterfly theme, you will be introduced to Monica, the Monarch Butterfly, and follow her incredible journey through life. From the moment she begins as a tiny egg, you will witness her transformation and growth all the way to her awe-inspiring migration.

As you explore the theme, you’ll engage in fun and interactive crafts and activities that bring Monica’s story to life. This will allow your child to connect with her journey in a hands-on way. Additionally, you’ll discover a butterfly’s anatomy, and your child will have the opportunity to work on a math word problem related to butterflies, making learning even more enjoyable!

Theme #2: Honey Bees

Harriette the Honey Bee begins her life as a tiny egg, and when she hatches, she’s surprised to see she doesn’t quite resemble her mama at all! Harriette then takes us on an exciting journey through her life cycle, where she introduces us to her fascinating “waggle” dance, the process of pollination, hibernation, and so much more.

As you follow along, you’ll be able to connect with Harriette’s journey through creative crafts and activities that reinforce what you’ve learned. Enjoy a cute poem and an exciting secret bee code message. Then, you’ll even get to create your own bee habitat to deepen your understanding of the busy life of a honey bee.

Theme #3: Stars and Constellations

Boris the Bear’s Grandpa is an excellent storyteller, and one evening, as Boris and Grandpa sit under the stars, Grandpa shares captivating tales about the night sky. He introduces Boris to the wonders of the constellations, including Ursa Major, Draco the Dragon, and Cassiopeia.

Along the way, you’ll get to create your very own star clock using the included printable. You can also explore the constellations with the ultimate game of hide and seek while enjoying a special stargazing evening.

Theme #4: Flowers

As brothers David and Liam grow their very own garden, they learn all about planting seeds, growing flowers, and the magic of photosynthesis. As their flower garden grows big and strong, the brothers learn about the many uses for flowers before harvesting their very own crop.

Your child will have the opportunity to grow their own garden. They will create beautiful art to inspire creativity and deepen learning. To further enrich the experience, I’ve included book suggestions and an engaging math word problem to spark some interest.

Theme #5: Frogs

Freddy the Frog wasn’t always a frog. Share in Freddy’s journey as he grows from a swimmer to a hopper! During Freddy’s adventures, we learn what frogs eat, where frogs live, and what happens to frogs when the winter months arrive.

Create your own 3D frog life cycle, then help Freddy catch his favourite food. Finally, play Frog Guess Who with the frog cards included.

Theme #6: Birds

Join beautiful Carrie the Cardinal as she takes us on a captivating journey through a bird’s life cycle. Along the way, we’ll uncover the challenges birds face as they learn to fly, search for food, and build their nests.

You’ll also have the chance to unleash your creativity by crafting your own comic with the template included. You will be helping to feed the birds around you and dive deep into a visual life cycle!

Throughout this program, we will introduce children to new information and concepts playfully and whimsically. The summer camp activities are set up specifically to solidify this new learning and develop core learning skills. Even more importantly, your child will spend special moments with you each and every day. You will both look back on and treasure these moments you have made together.

This six-week nature program gives you and your children a simple summer filled with nature and beautiful memories. Get your copy of Summer Camp at Home and make this the best, most beautiful summer!
