Sun Science Unit Study Review

The Sun is right at the center of our solar system—and it’s kind of a big deal! It keeps us warm, gives us light, helps plants grow, and even makes weather happen. Without the Sun, life on Earth just wouldn’t be possible. Inside the Sun’s core, energy is being made all the time, and that energy travels all the way to Earth as heat and light. Cool, right?

That’s why I’m so excited to share my Sun Science Family Unit Study—a bright and fun-filled adventure perfect for families with curious kids ages 4 to 12. This Sun Science unit study is packed with hands-on experiments, playful math and literacy activities, and even some creative art projects to bring science to life.

Whether you’re learning at the kitchen table or outside in the sunshine, this unit is designed to make science fun, memorable, and meaningful for the whole family.

Let’s dive in and explore the amazing science of our Sun—together!

Hands-On Sun Science Family Unit Study

What is a Family Unit Study?

But first… what exactly is a Family Unit Study?

This unit study, like all of our ever-growing library of unit studies, takes one big topic—Sun Science—and breaks it down into ten manageable, bite-sized learning topics. This format gives you the freedom to dive into learning at a pace that works for your family.

Perhaps you do one area per day, perhaps one per week. Whatever suits your fancy! You can learn and explore from start to finish in about 1-2 hours per bite-sized learning topic.

Each of the ten topics included with a unit study contains everything you need for that topic, including:

  • a curated YouTube video,
  • suggested information to read,
  • a “what’s happening” section,
  • an interesting fact,
  • a discussion question,
  • a literacy or math enrichment question,
  • and an ultimate-can’t-be-beat hands-on activity!

Dive in and watch the sparks of wonder ignite. Watch the child-led learning take off. Watch what happens when children are engaged in what they are learning!

Sun Science Family Unit Study Review

Now, let’s take a closer look at the 10 fascinating topics you will cover in the Sun Science Family Unit Study.

Topic #1: All About the Sun

The Sun is the only star in our solar system and provides Earth with essential energy in the form of heat and light. It has a huge impact on our lives! In this topic, you will learn some of the benefits we get from the Sun. Let’s discover how we can harness the Sun’s energy to generate power by building a Solar Updraft Tower together.

Topic #2: The Sun and the Seasons

Did you know the Earth takes 365 days to orbit the Sun? As it travels, the tilt of the Earth causes the seasons to shift—from chilly winters to blooming springs, sunny summers, and crisp autumns. We’ll explore how this tilt affects different parts of the world and then dive into a fun math enrichment activity. Each word problem comes in three levels, so everyone—from younger learners to older students—can join in and challenge themselves!

Topic #3: Summer Solstice

The longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere occurs on June 20th or 21st. This day is known as the Summer Solstice and marks the official start of summer. This is definitely something to celebrate. So let’s plan a summer solstice party together!

Topic #4: The Science of Shadows

Have you ever tried to catch your shadow? It’s tricky because it moves when you do! Shadows appear when something blocks sunlight, creating a dark shape on the ground. In this activity, we’ll observe how the Sun’s position in the sky changes the shape and size of our shadows. Get ready to move, explore, and discover the science behind this everyday phenomenon!

Topic #5: What is a Sundial?

Long before clocks and watches, people used sundials to tell time. A sundial works by tracking the Sun’s shadow as it moves across the sky. In this activity, we’ll explore how sundials use sunlight and shadows to mark the hours and take a closer look at their fascinating history. You’ll also take part in a literacy enrichment project, with three different skill levels, so everyone can learn and research at their own pace.

Topic #6: Heat and Light

While we may perceive sunlight as white light, sunlight put through a prism showcases the spectrum of rainbow colors. Did you know that the color black absorbs all colors of light, while the color white reflects all colors of light? Let’s test this theory with an exciting color of heat science experiment!

Topic #7 What Makes a Sunset?

As the Sun sets, we often see a sky filled with vibrant colors, a very different sight than a blue sky in the day. This iconic, colorful sky during a sunset is due to physics—more specifically, the scattering and refraction of sunlight. After you learn about the science behind a sunset, let’s enjoy the beauty by creating your own watercolor picture.

Topic #8: Solar Power

Did you know solar energy is the most plentiful energy source on Earth? The Sun produces energy deep in its core, which reaches us as light and heat. Solar power turns that energy into electricity we can use every day. In this hands-on activity, you’ll explore how solar power works—and even create your own solar-powered experiment to make a tasty treat using the Sun!

Topic #9: Sun Pictures

Cyanotypography is a monochrome photographic printing process that produces a cyan-blue print when exposed to sunlight. This is something that was invented in 1842! Let’s take pictures with the Sun together in a fascinating sun art experiment.

Topic #10 Sun Safety

Light from the Sun is essential for life on Earth, but some of these light rays can actually cause harm to human skin. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is a type of radiation emitted from the sun. Let’s learn about some of the Sun’s risks and how to keep ourselves safe. Then, share what you have learned in a fun and creative way!

And there you have it—the ten exciting, hands-on learning topics that make up our great big Sun Science Unit Study! From exploring how shadows move, to discovering the power of solar energy, to making art inspired by sunshine—this unit is full of engaging activities designed to spark curiosity and make learning about the Sun a joyful experience for the whole family.
